Artist’s Statement:

I paint the scenes that I love to have surrounding me. My work is frankly pictorial--clouds, mountains, vistas. To me landscape is emotion, and I have to open myself up to find the expressive mark and the color that belongs to a moment. My paintings imply a particular light by my use of color, a wind by a torn-up cloud, or a coming storm by leaves standing stiffly apart from each other because of a static charge. I try to capture the sounds, the light, the smells, and even the charge in the air in each of my works. The planet we live on is alive and in constant motion; it could keep me busy for the rest of my life.

Bio:

Bepe Kafka was born in Newport News, Virginia, and has painted from a very young age. She got her BFA from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA, and her MFA from the University of Pennsylvania, studying under the great landscape painter Neil Welliver. Upon receiving her degree, she lived in New York City, but found city life ultimately rather wearing, so moved to the suburbs in New Jersey. In 1998, on a snowmobiling vacation in Wyoming, she turned to her husband and said, "Can you tell me why we are living in New Jersey?" The rest, as they say, is history, and Bepe has found her joy painting the natural beauty of Utah.
